Lymphatic Massage is a special type of Massage Therapy and can also be called Manual Lymphatic Drainage or Lymph Drainage, Lymph Massage, Lymphatic Massage Therapy. The terms sound all very similar, however they are in most cases not exactly the same, but they ultimately have all the same goal: This form of therapy helps to clear the lymphatic system in the body.
To better explain this, let’s talk about the lymphatic system first:
What is the lymphatic system?
Let’s talk about the lymphatic system first in order to better understand what Lymphatic Therapy intends to address.
Every inch of your skin is made up by an intimate meshwork of lymph vessels and they also surround each organ in great detail. This silent system is constantly working to keep us healthy and this is why it is of utmost importance to keep the lymphatic fluids flowing. Without it, our body would start swelling up, and our cells would be full of stagnant fluid , not knowing where to go. Lymphatic blockages in the bodily system can cause swelling, which is also called lymphedema, which is simply put, a buildup of waste.
It is important to understand that lymphatic systems do not have a pump of its own to transport lymph fluids throughout. The body relies on movement and massage to flush these fluids. Sedentary lifestyles and certain conditions can cause lymph fluid to build up. In order to flush away these toxins of the body and to relieve the symptoms such as congestion as a result from these blockages, manual lymphatic drainage might be beneficial. (Btw., this is also the reason why regular exercise is so important and has so many health benefits.) Since lymph naturally transports free fatty acids from the small intestine to the bloodstream, some people even believe that such therapies might help speed up weight loss and reduce cellulite. Typically this form of therapy is used to reduce pain, swelling, bruising, and as post-liposuction care. Read more here
Also, not all Lymphatic Drainage is the same even though, they all have the same goal. There is Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Simple Lymphatic Drainage, Compression Pumps, there are also Lymphatic Breathing Techniques and more. Talk to your therapist to get more details.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage or Lymphatic Massage is a gentle type of massage which is intended to encourage the natural circulation of the lymph through the body. It can be used to enhance the overall well-being and immunity of the body, however it is also being used for Lymphedema (lymphoedema in British English), also known as lymphatic obstruction. This is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system is known as the cleanser of almost every tissue in the body. There are a variety of lymph drainage techniques and all of them are extremely light-touch and are very easy on the client.

It can be used for various conditions such as lymphedema, which can occur for example through the removal of lymph nodes or immediately after radiation therapy or surgery, or weeks, months, and even years later or any other damage of the lymph nodes. As a result, a blockage in the lymphatic system occurs which is part of the immune system thus not allowing lymph fluids from draining well, and the fluid buildup leads to a swelling. Dr. Andrew Weil has some interesting information about it on his website which is worthwhile to read.
Furthermore, there have been indications that it can be also beneficial for Allergies and/or food sensitivities, Bloating, Brain fog, Chronic lethargy (persistent tiredness), Constipation, Depression, Digestive problems, Swollen lymph nodes.
Also, be aware, as of any therapy including massage therapy, there could be side effects and there are certain conditions where this form of therapy should be avoided. Always ask your practitioner in advance about it!
